I have this race on Saturday. 71kms from Lizard to Lands End. This clip makes it look very runable but it's anything but, especially after Lamorna Cove. (about half way). There is a lot of rock climbing.
It will be very useful for me as a recce for Arc of Attrition and Lizard Pt is about 16kms into the Arc route and Lands End is a major cut off point. Of course the conditions will be totally different in January and most of this will be done in the dark and cold then. I have done a bit of this course and beyond LE once before, it's terrifying in the daylight, let alone at night!
I've been nursing a calf injury, so hoping just to finish. I think it's a 12hr30 cut off with interim cut offs along the way. It's about a 5hr drive from home.

Good luck mate. Is it a daylight race? You would have nearly 17 ours of daylight there at the moment wouldn't you? Hope the weather is kind too!

Cheers Roxii. My wave is off at 7.10am and it's currently getting dark just on 10pm, so to finish in daylight would mean a very good race from me, or a really bad one if that daylight is on Sunday.

How did you go FP?? Got the 100km Kosciuszko in Dec, first time at the distance and wondering how to train and race it 😀 Did Celtman Solo a couple of weeks ago btw. Solid day out! Unfortunately, not well mate. Had a DNF at just 72km. I suffer randomly from searing hip pain but it doesn't happen in every race but this was one of them and I had a left calf that just got tighter and tighter. Was going OK up until about 48km and was on track for my pacing target and reached halfway in 7hr20. Because this is a race that can be done over two days with camping overnight (or straight through like I was doing ) hal way is 'Base Camp' and there is a whole village of tents, food, bars and what not. I sat down here and had some hot food, a cold Coke, changed my socks etc. When I got up, my calf went really tight at once and I knew something had gone 'bang'. My hip was starting to play up here as well. Walked out of base camp for about 3km and then tried to trot along on the flats and downs but it was not great at all. So i walked in the hope that my legs would come back to me but they never did. Got to the next aid station and had to sit and have a cup of tea. I was eating ok but not as regular as before (I have an eat alert every 20 mins on watch) I trudged on by by the aid station at 72km, I was done. It had taken me 4hrs to do 22km, I was getting slower and was not prepared to put my body through that for another 7-8hrs. There were quite a few DNFs, mostly weather related. We had either bazing sunshine and exposure or torrential rain and thunder, wind and cold with absolutely nothing inbetween and it was like that all day. The weather didn't affect me that much though, I'd packed accordingly but loads had not. I've done 11 races this year so far, had 2 DNFs and one DNS with a calf injury. I'm pretty dissapointed but it happens and as you age, it happens more. Re your 100km race, that sounds tricky in Dec. It will be hot down low and could be cold up high, so pack for a bit of everything. I try and train on the same type of terrain as my A races will be on but if not possible then I look at the the profile. If there is a lot of climbing, I always will sacrifice distance over vert in a training week but you need a mix of both. These days, I separate a long training from a high vert session as try to combine both is too time consuming. Try training to walk fast and climb 'with purpose'. It's easy to run at distance quite well and then practically stroll the limbs but you're better off running slower and walking faster IMO Well done on the CM Solo, that's not an easy thing to do.

That's a tough way to end the day.
Thanks for the training tips - it's so tempting to focus on kms rather than hours and vertical but there's no avoiding the hills unfortunately. It's funny with the Celtman run because it's on very narrow and cut in trails on large rocks so although the elevation is less than I've trained for in long runs, I ended up going slower because it was so easy to trip or roll an ankle. Goes to training on equivalent conditions to get the feel for it where possible but there's nothing like that around Brisbane.

Cheers mate, yeah it was a bit hard to take.
You do need a mix of both but at my age in training, I find it easier to separate them and to practice the art of walking fast. That will get you a long way when you can't run but it's a skil for sure.
Re the trails, some of them are gnarly over here. The South West Coast Path is 635 miles, scarily gnarly in a lot of places and absolutely terrifying in others, especially the tip of Cornwall, which is where I'm attempting Arc100 iin Jan. making trips down there between now and then is essential. You can't familiarity IMO.

It's a clever distance because even on a flat course, unless you are an exceptional walker, it's a bit too far to walk each lap and have enough time for admin before the next lap.

I'm not sure whether my legs or mind would give out first!! Yup, that Canberra HIM where it absolutely pissed rain, one of the motos crashed down the steep Coppins Crossing Road (as did quite a few competitors, not to mention numerous punctures), and no-one had a modern day meltdown about 'duty of care'. Back in the day when triathlon was hard mate and if you f*cked up, it was your fault, not someone else's

I would be a dnf on the first lap - not completing a loop within an hour.

I'm targeting the UK Backyard Champs at Stafford as one of my A races next year. I'd love 24hrs but we'll see. Need to get over Arc in January first. I have this race in just over 2wks. It will serve as a 'reverse recce' for the second half of Arc. www.votwo.co.uk/atlantic-coast-challenge

As you probably, I was struck down with Covid a week ago, first time I've had it and was hit hard but hopefully will be ok for ACC. I've tested negative but buils up has been patchy at best, so definitely a fingers crossed moment!
