I am starting to look around for a MTB. It will be used to ride easy offroad/trails and also to pool/gym and back (when they finally open). I do not really know MTBs but am trying to get reasonably cheap but long lasting. Looking around the $700 - $800 mark. Yrah, yeah, I know - pretty hard to find cheap and long lasting. 184cms and around the 100 kg. I was looking at this CUBE Any thoughts on this bike or anything else you consider good ? I'm not a fan of SRAM. It's a bummer that 99 Bikes withdrew their 20% off for Tri membership. Ta FM

I may have found a locally produced mtb - Hillbrick Cycles. Great price, good components and he has a fantastic reputation. About 30% less cost than most mtbs for the same quality.
I will decide in the next week or so.

I got a bike fit at his home in the late 90s. Still going strong and supporting the local cycling community. I get my bike serviced there. FM

He was working out of his home but have since moved into a new place. He has been there a while. Hillbrick FM

Looks like the Hillbrick mtb may fall through as they only make them to medium. Bummer. So, back to the drawing board. Just trying to get something around $800 that has a lockout suspension and goes well on on/off road. I was starting to look at Polygon or Reid. Does anyone have any thoughts on them or others ?
Thanks

I have been riding a Polygon Entiat (hard tail 120mm fork) for a couple of years. Lots of fun had. I also had a Polygon road bike, it was great but had to be retired after a chainring bolt embedded itself in the chain stay.

Geez, I don't think there is a single MTB hardtail for $900 - $1.2K in NSW. Everyone is out of stock.

Finally done and dusted. There is absolutely no stock around. I was speaking to a bike shop and there is a 400 day lag order at the moment. He has started ordering for 2024 models. A number of component factories are still feeling the pinch with an inability to deliver full bikes. So, I have bitten the bullet and got one of these. I got a lot better price than listed as the bike shop supports the Mac Tri club. I will be getting it in the next few days. FM GT Elite

Enjoy it Mick. It's weird about bikes, they are in short supply over here and yet I've beeb trying to sell my P3 and can't get any takers, even at a knock down price.

Thanks for asking Slowman.
I haven't ridden it as much as I could/would/should. A ton of rain and mud in Sydney has dampened my enthusiasm over the past six months.
I have ridden it locally plus up near Port Stephens. I found a great fire trail from Shoal Bay that travels around 30 kms. The magpies have also put me off in the bush at the moment. After WS 70.3 and Nepean, I will be hopping back on it. I am also heading back up to Fingal Bay so will hit the trail again.
One thing that I haven't got used to yet is not having clip ins, like the roadie. My feet have slipped a couple of times. How do the experienced riders go ? Better shoes, pedals etc or just better peddlers ? Feedback is appreciated.

I just went with clipless from the start as I hated the idea of flats but i don't 'sweet jumps' as Napoleon Dynamite would say!

Then I got some proper MTB shoes, cheapie Shimanos for about $130. These are much better, easier to clip in and out as they have a little raised guide which directs the cleat into the right position more easily. In fact when I have a hairy moment, at least one foot just seems to clip out unconsciously. And you can walk in them easily. I have my MTB pedals as loose as they will go too. For serious single track, I'd probably advise newbies to do a few weeks in sandshoes before clipping in however.
