Probably one for FP but interested in any other input as well. Will probably leave Aus in the next couple of months and be away for as long as it takes for the place to sort itself out (so could be quite a while!). Looking for a base for about a month or so in the UK - good access to trail runs, mountain biking (time of year will probably preclude road biking), trekking etc. Needs to be well away from cities so looking around the Lake District - Keswick? Really like the west coast of Scotland but guessing it will be too cold/dark/wet. Good coffee is a must but I can only dream... If it all works out, Canada opens up Sept 7th so once the snow comes would head over there. WFH has never looked so good!

Will be much nicer than a British winter, especially Provence

If you love trail running and MTB cairngorms, around deeside, Aviemore, though in winter you will need snow shoes and xc skis

Aviemore’s an interesting one - hadn’t thought of that. Did ski there once a long long time ago 😄. Would have to learn Scottish (always wanted to learn a second language!) but I must admit parts of Scotland appeal a lot more than England.

Hi Truck, missed this, so I'm late here but:
Given the time of year you are looking at and how much of the Lake District essentially shuts all winter, unless you like a lot of isolation, I would avoid. LD area is also pretty dramatic and beautiful but passes and trails can change pretty instantly with bad weather.
If it were me, at that time of year, I would look more in the Exmoor area, plenty of space, milder weather and shops and towns around if you do need them without being trapped in. Also very easy access to the SW Coast Path (which is 635 miles).
I'm doing a race in the general area on Oct 1st, it goes from Barnstaple to Minehead. I absolutely love the wildness of the UK coast in winter but everyone is different.

Probably not the point and would miss out on enjoying the scenery but I guess the downside of all this endurance racing. Will dig a bit deeper.

I have a race called 'Arc of Attrition' in late Jan. I'm only doing the 50mile version, as I have not qualified for the 100. It's amazing to think that it's still part of the same path that my race on Oct 1st is on! FKT for SWCP is 10d15h18m by Damien Hall.
