I know there was a great thread on this, but didn't really pay any attention. My girlfriend has signed up to UTA50 and thinks some running poles maybe beneficial, so two questions: - Are running poles a benefit for UTA?
- Assuming they are, what should she be looking for in poles? She is not brand or mega high performance focussed, but just wants quality items that will do the job
Cheers all.

Very individual really. Some prefer the type with a loop strap and others don't. Some like a more substantial handle etc. I would advise getting 'Z-fold' types over telescopic. Carbon vs alloy, smae as bikes, price/weight. Also look for ones that have tips that can be replaced if she intends to use them long term. I use these but there are loads of options out there: www.leki.com/uk/product-area/trail-running/poles/3351/micro-trail-pro/

Are these things legal in a marathon?

In a road marathon I doubt it but if they are I don't think it would be advisable.
Mainly for the reason that in general, on the trails you have few people to the side of you and then not for very long. In a road marathon the issue would be tripping people to the side of you and the danger of hitting someone with them when you are putting them back in the pack or getting them out.

I recently bought some new lovely light carbon poles and chose tele over fold. I am wondering why you choose the other?

I recently bought some new lovely light carbon poles and chose tele over fold. I am wondering why you choose the other? Couple of reasons really but I don't think either is a terrible choice. For me, I'm interested in covering ground as fast as I can. I'm not a pleasure hiker (although 20 hrs in to an ultra, you're not doing anything quick!) so I like the speed at which the Leki poles assemble and collapse. The length at which a z-fold collapses and folds is significantly shorter than tele, which can make a huge difference when running, plus they tend to be grabbed by the cords on the Salomon packs easier. (my poles are always on the outside of an system I use). Getting the teles in and out on tricky terrain when running can be a bit trickier as the mechanisms can catch and when moving quickly, you want to minimise the time your hands and arms are note helping you balance. Looking down to un-snag something is a distraction for me. Maybe I'm just bad at co-ordination? There is a weight disadvantage to teles but that was a minor consideration for me.

So far I haven't been stowing the poles, just keeping them in hand for the whole run. Which was a big reason I wanted lighter to keep the load on the wrists down some more. I've got a big run this weekend. I will do some practice of getting them on and off the pack and see what happens. Even just running with them on the pack will be interesting as I've not experienced it before.

No worries Katz, good luck with your run, let me know how you go. I do see quite a few people running with them in hand pretty much all the time, I think depends on how tired you are. The only issue I could see with carrying them excessively is having them prevent you from eating but applies equally to Z-fold or tele.
I've found just practice as much as possible helps and it's always good to run with a loaded pack as much as possible, even on a relatively short run or a walk. It just gets your body used to it. It's easy to test various things but sometimes on race day, it's surprising how heavy it can feel.
One tip, when descending, make sure your hands are out of the loops because you don't want to tumble connected to your poles. A couple of clips might help.
