So I picked this up for $50 yesterday. Its in remarkably good nick for its age and look all original. Probably very early 90's thankfully was a 54 too so a good fit for me. Shimano 300 EX 7 speed running gear,, downtube shifters with Biopace cranks, dia comp single pivot brakes, wheels are the old school non-machined brake track Araya rims. Paintwork is very good for its age, a few rub marks here and there, but no dings, no rust at all, just lots of dust. Should only need a good cleanup, tyres and tubes and a lube to get running, only things I may change would be for safety to maybe get some mavic open pro wheels and change the levers to the Shimano Aero levers for slightly better braking but it will just be for cruising around so I'm not anticipating needing to grab a fistful of brake at any stage. Gee the old school bars feel narrow I know its not a "classic" or worth much at all, but it seemed too god to end up as a scrap bike or a rusty pub bike. Anyway could be fun to see how nice it ends up.

Just been stripping it down and to give an idea of how well kept it is, for any one that has tinkered with old bikes, the pedals came off easily which is amazing. Thank goodness I didn’t chuck out my square taper crank tool.

So I’ve been taking the old girl out for a few rides and she is a beaut. I’d forgotten how nice steel rides. Apart from the moment when I lift it uff the rack and realise it’s on the wrong side of 12kg the weight isn’t too much of an issue.. So the conundrum is that I’m currently enjoying riding it more than my dura ace di2 Merida. The only downside is the down tube shifters. So I’m tossing up buying an old donor bike with 8 or 9 speed sti and moving that across. I do like the fact the $50 bike hasn’t cost me more than bar tape and tyres but sti levers would be nice.

The bike I have on the trainer is a 58 but my road and tri bike are 56s. I've tried to set them up the same but just can't. Maybe I need to do what you did and find an "oldie but goodie" 56 to put on the trainer. I tried looking for frames but they just cost too much.

Hey Roxii (and others that are interested in vintage bikes). There is a Classic Bicycle Show in Sydney this coming August. It looks pretty cool. It will have penny farthing racing. Over near your old stomping ground. Maybe you can make a track comeback with that bike. Sydney Classic Bicycle ShowFM
