Been swimming a bit. About 10-15k a week
Only paddles and Bouy at the moment, building an aerobic base and strength.
Kinda plateaued last week. Had no umph to the stroke. Stuck in some fast 50's tonight and it felt like my body woke up. What causes this reaction? Like what happened during the fast 50's that made my stroke and body come to life?
Cheers all ✌️

Most people have a better stroke when they sprint. They've got a faster stroke rate, suddenly they're kicking instead of letting their legs dangle, less drag, better body position. I kind of think people need to learn to swim well at a slow pace. Plenty of people can knock out Ok 50s and 100s. Get them to swim an easy 400 and watch their stroke go to sh!t.

Cheers all ✌️ if you always swim slow you will swim slow. I dont agree that swimming needs so much of an aerobic base like running and cycling. Try doing the following and I almost guarantee you will swim faster over time. Do a set of 100's (say 3) at a medium pace, then straight into some fast 50's (say 3 to start) then back to some medium 100's, then straight into some max 25's, then back to your medium 100's. Build up to several sets of this. All based on teaching your body to deal with high lactic levels. after a few weeks, start doing some max 100's. This has worked wonders for me

Not often but I'll change it. There's for and against the argument that there's no need for an aerobic base in swimming. But I prescribe to the idea that deep aerobic fitness is essential for a good day during an Ironman. Yes, I've done one but I can honestly say that the fitness for the swim allowed me to cruise to a negative split bike and come into the marathon in good condition. What's between my ears caused the sh!t run leg. Thanks too to ZED 👍✌️😎

I’ve found lately I’m swimming better. Ie faster when I don’t actually feel like going.
I’ve also started a new routine of flippers for warm up.
Also the more regular I swim, the easier it seems. Ie. 1km a day. Today I did 3k But always a minimum of 1km

last ironman, i built up my swim to 18km for the last 8 weeks. There is no way i will be doing that again as my swim time was rubbish on both occasions. ( 1hr 8). I will definitely just be doing quality work on all disciplines the time and reduce the quantity. I.e swimming only up to 12 km a week, just a couple of 6hr rides and the rest 5hr, and running, nothing past 3hrs max.

I did 6 in a 25 and that was pretty average! If I do it again next year, I won't do massive sets in the pool again, its just sh!t. I'll do similar weekly volume, but shorter sets and see how I go.

He talks about it in detail in his chat on the Rich Roll podcast, if you are interested in a different way of thinking. 🤷🏻♂️✌️👍 5 days work - mainly swimming at the moment at least 3k a session 2 days only life required movement. ie - walk to the shops and chores. Training everyday got me fit but the 5/2 allows me to keep the Epstein Barr/over training symptoms in check, therefore allowing almost continual improvement in base fitness. My greedy binge training habits are hard to change though....lol
