The PTO Athletes Committee has devised a new ranking system which incorporates factors such as the level of competition at a race and the prestige of the event; although it is still heavily weighted towards overall time and finishing position, as per Torsten’s rating system.
The most noticeable change in the revised rating structure is … Ash Gentle is now ranked No.1 and Lucy C-B No.2 in the women’s rankings.
I note that Aaron Royale has had a big jump into the top 10, and even Cam Wurf has progressed.
These movements reflect the quality of the races where athletes obtained their points. For example Ash Gentle’s three best races were against stacked fields at the three big PTO events. Ditto Aaron Royale. Lucy only raced 4 times - at three world championships and the last PTO race. Wurf only raced 3 times, and even though he had a mediocre year (in Triathlon at least) two of those races were at IM WC’s.
It did seem odd that - in theory at least - an athlete could put in 3 ‘fast’ (according to Torsten’s calculations) 70.3 races against nobody fields at $10K prize money pissant events and end up with a higher ranking than someone who finished inside the top 10 at three PTO and IM WC races during the year.

Agree with Ash Gentle, but not sure Lucy deserves to be number 2 after missing half the year

Agree with Ash Gentle, but not sure Lucy deserves to be number 2 after missing half the year Lucy had an impressive comeback - her four races were within 10 weeks. She won 1 world championships, placed second in the most important WC and also finished with a 3rd in the last PTO race and 4th at 70.3 WC. No one woman dominated this year - the closet being Ash herself in the PTO, so in the race for the second PTO ranking slot there certainly was a case for Lucy to be compared with Taylor, Chelsea and Daniele IMO (each of which had at least one dominant performance). I think I’d have gone with Ryf, becuase she dominated St George IM WC and the Collins Cup PTO race, but there is a case for Lucy.

Also worth noting that there were just over two points separatingLucy in 2nd and Chelsea down in 7th (!). It was incredibly tight, and representive of the fact that no one woman dominated last year; nor was there a select ‘big three’ that really broke away from the pack. It was pretty competitive, with mixed results, all year.
