Port IM is just over 1600 metres of elevation. It looks like a non-stop roller coaster ride. Port IMBut THEY didn't say anything about HIMs. Looking at Port this year, the half's elevation has increased dramatically. The last lot I did between 2015 and 2019, the elevation was about 650 metres. This year it is approximately 900 metres. That's almost a 40% increase. Hopefully my dodgy knee will last. Tassie HIM was approx 1,100 metres of elevation. Is OZ changing the landscape to HTFU?? FM

That’s a lumpy old ironman course.
Curious as to why they simply didn't cut out some the odd little outs and back sections, and just shorten the bits at each end and run two 90 km laps between Pembroke at the far northern end of the course and say lake Innis at the far southern end. Keep it simple, stupid.

I have just read on FB that someone rode the HIM course on the weekend. It is looking more like just under 1,100 metres of elevation than 900 metres. I figure there will be a few walking on the run, which probably includes me.

We have done both the full and half course ( filming for fulgaz) Yeah the half does have abit more climbing , but it’s far from hard and everyone has to do it The thing is with hills are Thre isn’t any difference between a hill or a flat ride , if your riding at 150 watts , you just do 150 watts weather u are going flat , uphill or downhill You just gotta pace yourself and not get all worked up about a hill Pacing is key wether it’s flat or hilly e Er
If you end up riding 20 mins longer than the previous course doesn’t mean you will walk the run , just don’t burn all your matches on everyone is riding the same course the smarter u ride and the better u have trained the better u will go
The full course has about 100 m more climbing than the previous course but the surface is better and will probably be a quicker course unless it’s windy ( which it usually is in may at port)
It’s funnie how we had all these hilly courses back in the day (triple mmm in syd, old Canberra half for eg) and nobody died and all managed it with fast times , but nowadays, if there is a hill it’s like the end of the world The surface is far better , it’s not hot mix but there is less pot hole/patch up sections

Thanks for that post aplover. I reckon from the map that a lot of that ‘northern’ section where most of the course will be run looks to be amongst the forests, so probably pretty sheltered from the wind - which the southern portion of the course definitely is not. Also, better road surfaces should make a huge difference. I’m now actually thinking of doing the 70.3 next year, based on what you say: a good hit out for me between my summer Aquabike campaign and the Aquabike WC in Townsville in late August. Will also probably back up for cairns 70.3 ~ five weeks later.

My better 3/4 and I rode today from Cassegrain to the turnaround near Wauchope. Surface is grainy the whole way - Port IM veterans think of golf course to Lake Cathie. No potholes, and nothing like the moon surface heading in to Bonnie Hills, and nothing like the climbs. Elevation around the new section are mostly rollers Give me this course over four ascents of Bonnie Hills and a second ascent of Matty Flinders any day of the week

Not the end of the world, just commenting that there are a few more hillier courses (neither good or bad). I was in my 40s when I did the Canberra Half 20 odd years ago. Now, it's a little different with a knee injury. Hopefully I will only need to get out of the saddle twice on the ride.
